The gift of a child is a treasure
One that many don't understand
When he looks up and smiles in wonder
Reaches out and takes hold of your hand

Oh so tiny and sweet and precious
So endearing in every way
The most blessed of God's many gifts
The sweet magic he shares every day

And to see him as he awakens
On a quiet and lovely morn
When he notices sunlight streaming
And we too see how God does adorn

Then so soon he becomes a person
A heart and a mind of his own
Just to know that we've had such a part
That he's come from the seeds that we've sewn

We nurture and love him completely
Watching miracles as he grows
We watch through his eyes as he studies
Things we think that we already know

The surprise when he sees a sparrow
Perched up high on his windowsill
The glow on his face as he ponders
The mud puddles that God's rain has filled

And watching him learn is such pleasure
Each new mountain he seeks to climb
Just tying his shoelaces warms us
When he grasps that this coin is a dime

And that first time we take him to school
With the tears streaming down our cheeks
He adjusts on the very first day
But for us it just seems to take weeks

Then he comes home one day and mentions
There's a girl in his class he likes
And suddenly childhood has left him
He's no longer our sweet little tyke

But we hold on because we need to
Hold long as we possibly can
Until one day we wake up and know
That our baby has grown to a man

How we long to hold him forever
But sometimes the Lord has a plan
And God's power is lain before us
When He urgently reaches His hand

For His purpose is known to no man
But a purpose He has indeed
Just remember that some are chosen
In His Kingdom of Heaven to lead

So cherish the memories of having
That sweet child that we loved so much
You showed tenderness, love and kindness
With each lingering, Mothering touch

And know that one day you will be there
To walk on the streets paved of gold
You will join him again in Heaven
Once again that sweet child you will hold
