New York - New Jersey
Port Authority Police Department
(Fallen Law Enforcement Officers Medal, PAPD Flag,
PAPD Patrol Car, PAPD Memorial Patch)
September 11, 2001 - Memorial

No police department in this nation's history lost as many officers in a single incident as did the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department on September 11, 2001.  From its inception on June 1, 1928 to September 10, 2001, the PAPD lost a total of 7 officers in the line of duty ... 7 officers over a period of 78 years.  On September 11, 2001, the Port Authority Police Department lost 3% of its total force!  Every uniformed rank of the Department lost someone on that fateful day.

Along with the 37 officers, an additional member of the PAPD force was also lost and is often overlooked in the statistics.  Sirius, an Explosive Detection K-9, was a 4 year old yellow labrador retreiver that was killed in the collapose of WTC Tower One.

This page is dedicated to the memory of all the 37 brave and fearless members of the Port Authority Police Department, whose selfless actions and incredible courage in the face of extreme personal risk, made sure that others escaped the World Trade Center, while sacrificing their own lives, so others could live.

The men and women of the PAPD, like me, who are left to serve and honor their memory will do so now and forever.  There can be no other way.  Their memory will always be honored and never forgotten!  Our Department Motto has a new value to us, because of the 37 ...

PRIDE - SERVICE - DISTINCTION

May God Bless them and their families.

37 Blue Angels

One made pancakes for his kids,
Another helped poor people on the skids,
One did the training academy run,
At Kennedy Airport one was top gun.

These four cops plus another thirty-three,
Did rush to defend liberty.
When their beloved Towers did fall,
They heard the cry, one and all.

No thought of self was first in mind,
They went to save all humankind.
"Higher, higher up the stairs!"
"It's an inferno, but we're not scared!"

"We'll save as many as we can,
For we truly love our fellow man."
But a time came when there was a shout,
"TIME TO EVACUATE & GET OUT!

"We're sorry but we have to stay,
So more can see the light of day."
No time to think of self at all,
Then suddently did the Towers fall.

They are angels now, patrolling the beat,
Their block is heaven's safest street!
They lived and died for the red, white and blue,
Port Authority 37, we won't forget you!

"The tiny PAPD force has long been overshadowed by the NYPD and NYFD.  But in deed and spirit, the Port Authority Police heroes stand shoulder to shoulder with their famous counterparts at ground zero - and wing to wing in heaven."

The dedicated men, women and K-9s of the Port Authority Police Department make up a force that is responsible for the safety and security of all the Port Authority land, sea, air and rail facilities in the Port District.  They are proud of the excellent services they provide the traveling public at the Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark Airports; the PATH Subway System that runs between New York City and New Jersey; the Port Authority Bus Terminal in the Times Square section of New York City; Port Newark and Port Elizabeth; the George Washington Bridge and the three Staten Island Bridges; the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels; and up until September 11th, the World Trade Center.

This page/project began as a page to honor a fallen police officer, which I did "In Memory of Police Officer George G. Howard."  Through that page and contact I have had with the Howard family and Lt. Hassett of the Port Authority Police Department, it has grown into what you see here.  I want to thank Lt. Kevin Hassett for his help and for supplying me the information necessary to create this page as a tribute to the Port Authority Police personnel who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
