When I Was A Child Times were simple back then ~ Playing out in the summer wind. There was a swing on granny's porch, And we never needed a coach. We would see how high it would go ~ And then we would push it slow. It was so much fun just to see ~ When it would move so free. Granny had some flowers I would pick ~ Then she would get after me with the stick. They were so beautiful to me ~ I couldn't help myself you see? She would forgive me real soon ~ When I came in for dinner at noon. She would have some rolls baked, And even one of her chocolate cakes. The cake would be six layers deep, And my promise was hard to keep. I told her I would not snitch ~ So she wouldn't get the switch. When dinner was all through ~ My afternoon nap was due. Me and granny would look at the catalog then ~ I would wish I had some money to spend. Then I would go out to play ~ For the rest of the day. I would bake dirt pies with china berries ~ And pretend they were the best cherries. Out under the old cedar tree just my cousin and me. We didn't mind the simple things ~ Like dirt pies and porch swings. We played hop scotch with a piece of glass, And the yard had no grass. Granny kept it swept clean and neat, And going to granny's was a wonderful treat!
