Addictions

Many people use the holidays as an excuse to abuse alcohol.  Thinking this is the season to be jolly so why not? Then they go to the parties, and make idiots of themselves. People on alcohol cause many accidents. Lives are in the balance because of someone that was drinking and driving. Still the old myth states that adults are old enough to control their drinking habits. The father tells his son he is not old enough yet to handle his beer. Yet men and women of all ages have accidents while drinking. Could it be that a person never gets to the age to handle drinking. People drink for social reasons or for habitual reasons. This begins to merge at some point into the same outcome for all. They like to drink is the truth of the story. It doesn't seem to matter that they act foolish, and that they have accidents that cause the death of others. It is just the addiction that drives them to the same bottle again and again. The addiction to alcohol drives the body to extremes and excessive actions. Children have gone without food so some dad or mom could have their booz. The rent will not be paid by some because of their habits.  Many street people started out as an addict to alcohol.  Many will lose their families and homes because of their drinking problems. It seems nothing to them matters more than having one more drink of alcohol. They will lie, steal, and kill for one more drink.

What is the answer? Man does not have the answers it is only in the mercy of God that man can overcome the desires of addictions whether it is alcohol, drugs, or sex. The fleshly desires of man pulls him ever toward destruction.  The human body is unable to conquer the evil desires without God giving them strength to overcome the addictions. Each person must seek God for mercy and strength to overcome any addiction.

My addiction was nicotine in cigarettes when I was very young I was overcome by the pull to smoke. It was not until I came to God in prayer, and asked Him to help me overcome was I able to be completely free of the habit. He gave me the strength to refuse the next cigarette, and now 29 years have passed since my last cigarette. The addiction was very strong, and I was smoking three packs of cigarettes a day. I know that only God could have helped me overcome this addiction. May you also come to God in prayer asking Him to help you overcome whatever addiction has a powerful pull in your life.
